Volunteer in the Sahara

About the project:

Riad Sahara

Riad Sahara is a project based on the dreams of Abdo and his brothers Rasta and Sahid. The Riad is the result of many years of hard work, renovating this family home which was once used as a base for the nomad family to rest and recuperate on journeys throughout the Sahara Desert.

A recent renovation of a 400 year old home, which has been in Abdo's family for many generations. It is built entirely from sand and stone, and features 5 comfortable bedrooms set around a courtyard garden.

Traditionally, the Berber nomads in Abdo's family would move from place to place, and had several homes where they could rest and find resources such as food and water.

A 1 week volunteer project in the Sahara turned into an experience of a lifetime!

"My name is Abdo . I was a nomad with my parents and siblings moving from pasture to pasture in the vast desert, until we settled in the village of Tagounite. The knowledge of the Saharawi has been passed down to me"
Abdo Talmoudi

Enter the Sahara:

Once the Project is complete the idea is for guests to experience staying in a traditional Riad, once a family home enabling you to reenact these ancient traditions, bringing them to life in a modern context.

The three brothers were brought up with all of the knowledge of the Sahara, handed down to them through many generations. The guides know how to navigate this alluring landscape, and are the most trustworthy and caring people that you could have this experience with.

You will experience the best time of your life, driving and camel trekking through the Sahara desert, and stopping at places that only real nomads can discover.

What makes this experience different?

Volunteering lets you interact and engage more with the local people. Spend time learning about their culture and experiencing their way of life.

Organising a tour into the Desert with this family, you will experience the best of the Desert. Most of the excursions that tour companies offer are not authentic. They are not real nomads, and they do not have the real knowledge of the Sahara. They are package deals that are arranged to give you the feeling of the real deal.

At Riad Sahara, they are Berber nomads who have lived and thrived in the desert for hundreds of years. They know exactly where to visit, and how to show you the very best that the Sahara has to offer.
