Impressions of Sri Lanka
On planning our trip around Sri Lanka we soon discovered that traveling around 2 weeks by public transport would be very restrictive and time consuming. Although the cheaper option and awesome cultural experience it would be to travel by train and bus, hiring a car gave us more freedom and time to explore this beautiful island nation. Still on an average of 12 GBP per day for car rental it wasn't that expensive but compared to spending less than a few dollars for train and bus it felt a lot.
Negombo - Pinnawala - Kandy
Pinnawale Elephant sanctuary
Located between Negombo and Kandy. Was an interesting place to stop over but definitely a place to make your own mind about this 'Sanctuary'
It is revered as a holy site by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians.
Around 5,500 stairs to reach the summit
Leaving the guesthouse at 3am to reach the top in time for sunrise
Forest paddy homestay - by far our most favourite homestay in Sri Lanka
Drinking local tea every morning
Always love the markets
The freedom of having a car is to stop whenever you want to take a photo
By far the most interesting way to explore is walking along the railway tracks
Always a wave and smile as the next train passes
Reaching 9 arch bridge
Along the road.....
Driving Sri Lanka is both exciting and tiring. Some of the most congested cities in the world and some of the scariest driving experiences. But the benefits is being able to stop whenever you want and take pictures....
A wild elephant walking along the side of the road
Wild monkeys was everywhere
being stuck behind slow trucks but still pretty awesome
