An Introduction to Zamami island!

Zamami-jima is a beautiful island belonging to the Kerama archipelago, located about 40km away from Okinawa main island.

Despite its harsh history during world war 2, Zamami is now known as a popular tourist destination with about 90% of the population employed in the tourism industry.

Main activities include Scuba-diving, Snorkeling, Sea kayaking and Whale watching (during winter to early spring)

Popular among day trippers is Furuzamami beach located about 1km from port, with its crystal clear waters teeming with colorful coral and many fish. There are 2 rental shops located at the beach both renting out snorkel sets and deck chairs with parasols. Also a nice little food shop, where you can buy traditional Okinawan food and some ice cream to cool you down.

Ama beach is another popular swimming area where if your lucky you can swim with turtles direct from the beach.

Both beaches are the only designated swimming areas on the island with lifeguards on duty from 8am till 5pm.

Zamami island is well known for its strong currents and ever changing tides. With plenty of beaches around the island and surrounding islands it is recommended to hire a guide for the day to really explore this beautiful area and discover some of the best snorkeling available without the crowd.

Gahi-jima and Agenashiku-jima are both undeveloped islands with picturesque empty white sand beaches located about 1km south of port. Perfect for 1 day or half day kayak tours with the chance of snorkeling from the beach and getting that real desert island experience.

There are a few observatories located around the island wether it be watching the sunset or enjoying the night sky. Best is to hire a scooter or bicycle to get around the island and enjoy the many views.

*Many foreign tourists arrive to Zamami without a plan and are left wondering what to do once here. Please be aware there is not much advertising on the island and local businesses are dotted around the main town without much signage. Foreigners are often seen wondering around looking for places to eat and stuff to do. Most tour businesses here are pre-booked online*
